Portraiture workshop: Learning from the Masters

I'm excited to be teaching a new virtual workshop this fall, "Portraiture: Learning from the Masters," at Santa Fe Workshops. Over my lifetime as a photographer, I've looked at a lot of great work, and have often copied the style of these masters, in order to learn from them. I've even had paid assignments where I had to copy specific works by Picasso, Sargent, and others, which was a blast.

We can learn so much as artists from this practice of looking closely at and copying the work of 'masters.' In fact, much of classical art school was the practice of going to museums and copying paintings, drawings, and prints seen there, in your own notebook or canvas. So why shouldn't photographers do the same?

In this class, we'll look closely at a lot of great portraiture: whether photography, painting, illustration, etching. We'll talk about how they did what they did, and then...we'll do what they did. Both through live demonstrations (by me) and lots of assignments (for you), you'll learn all about planning, posing, props, lighting, composition, color, tone, and post-processing. We might even talk a little about AI.

It's an exciting, inspiring, and fun class that will transform the way you see, and the way you photograph. Don't miss it.
